1) Choose Colors Carefully

One of the first aspects that you should consider of your child’s bedroom is the color. This includes the colors of the walls, flooring, bedding, and other accent pieces. You may think that bright, bold colors are fun and cheery, but if you’re looking to create a calming space, they are not conducive to that goal.

Neutral colors for the walls are a great place to start. If you want to add a pop of color, try using a pastel. Brighter colors and bolder patterns will likely make your child feel energized rather than calm. And while energy is preferable during some activities, they are less likely to be the ideal colors used in a bedroom where your child is expected to rest.

2) Ensure Everything Has a Place

Both adults and children alike tend to be less stressed and tense when an area is clean and organized. Children’s rooms can get cluttered easily and if everything does not have its own place, it can be difficult to ever feel like the room is really clean. We understand that keeping a kid’s or toddler’s room organized is a constant battle, but before they go to sleep for the night, try to ensure that all of their things are put into the proper place. This will make sleep come easier.

3) Consider All the Aspects of Lighting

When considering how lighting can affect your child’s mood, it’s essential to consider it in all its forms. What type of window treatments are in your kid’s room? How much natural light comes in throughout the day and how much control do you have over it?

You’ll also want to consider the type of artificial lighting you’re using in your child’s bedroom. Soft lights that are on dimmer switches are preferable to harsh floroucents to create a calming space.

One last form of lighting that should be considered for a child’s bedroom is their nightlight. Their nightlight should be bright enough to offer them some peace of mind so that they can sleep, but not so bright that it disrupts their sleep cycle.

4) Make it Comfortable and Cozy

Everyone is more relaxed and calm when they are in a comfortable and cozy environment. Choose soft bedding and pillows, as well as a nice mattress for your kid’s bedroom. A few plush animals throughout won’t hurt either.

5) Keep the Temperature in Mind

Temperature is a factor that affects sleep at every age. Keeping the room slightly under room temperature during the nighttime will help your little one sleep better and stay asleep. It also gives them a reason to cuddle up in their soft comforter and bedding.

6) Consider a White Noise Machine

Ambient noises and the sounds of a settling house can keep children up at night or throughout naptime. Creaking, cracking, and other soft noises can sometimes seem scary to small children. A white noise machine, preferably one that comes with several options for sounds, is a great way to minimize sleep disruptions from ambient noise.

7) Try Aromatherapy

Another option to create a soothing, relaxing environment in your child’s bedroom is to consider aromatherapy. While you may not want to burn a candle in your kid’s room, there are other options. An oil diffuser on a shelf away from their bed releasing the scent of lavender into the air may be just what your child needs to feel calm and relaxed.
